What Is COVID-19?
The Coronavirus (COVID-19) is a very contagious illness, easily passed from one person to another. The virus is known for having a significant impact as it has spread throughout countries all over the world. Some of the common symptoms that are induced by COVID-19 include:
- Fever
- Dry cough
- Shortness of breath or heaviness in the chest
- Chills
- Aches and muscle pains
- Loss of taste or smell
If you have been experiencing one or more of these symptoms, consult your medical provider immediately.
How Does COVID-19 Spread?
COVID-19 is primarily spread through the close contact of individuals. For this reason, the CDC advises that when going out in public for essential reasons, you are to distance yourself at least six feet away from others. COVID-19 can also be contracted when someone within your vicinity coughs, sneezes, or talks just enough to pass the virus to you. The virus is also known for spreading through frequently-touched surfaces.
How to Protect Yourself and Others from COVID-19
There is no vaccine to prevent COVID-19, although there are simple, effective methods we can take to impede the spread. Some preventative measures include:
- Wearing a face mask in public
- Washing hands thoroughly with soap and water for 20 seconds
- Using hand sanitizer
- Disinfect frequently touched surfaces
- Staying at home as much as possible
- Avoiding highly populated areas as much as possible
- Avoiding close contact with others (6 feet apart)
What is Social Distancing?
Social distancing is the practice of limiting face-to-face contact and social gatherings in efforts to decrease the spread of illness. It is understandable that some people have to continue going out for work or to purchase groceries. People are advised to take care of tasks online, if possible. When purchasing food, people are also advised to limit in-person contact.
If You’re Sick, You Can Prevent the Spread
If you are sick, there is no need to panic. By separating yourself, you can impede the spread as well. The following measures can be practiced if you test positive for the coronavirus:
- Stay and rest at home
- Avoid modes of public transportation
- Distance yourself from household members and pets
- Seek professional medical to relieve symptoms
Are You At Risk for Severe Illness?
Everyone is at risk of contracting COVID-19, although some people might experience more severe symptoms or conditions if they do catch the virus. Elderly populations and people who suffer from respiratory diseases are at higher risk for a more severe diagnosis of COVID-19. This is also why it is crucial that we practice safety and preventative methods as much as possible.
